The 2009/10 season is nearly upon us! With this in mind I would like you to put TUESDAY 8th SEPTEMBER in your diaries as the first evening at Bournside School for our Winter Training…. (hopefully it won’t quite feel like winter at this point!)

At the August Committee Meeting the structure for the training sessions will be being put into place. There are many items to be discussed around this issue and we will ensure that we take all aspects into consideration to come up with the best solutions that we can. With this in mind if you would like put forward any positive solutions to any problems that you feel lie with the training structure could you please email me on lhchockey@live.co.uk before Tuesday 4th August so that I can take these to the table.

During the summer there will be fitness training taking place on the Monday nights that the men’s first team aren’t playing in the Newent league. This means that up until the end of August there will be fitness training every Monday (apart from the 22/06/09, 29/06/09, 06/07/09 and the 13/07/09).

All are welcome (anyone who has played for a senior side would be suitable to attend) The training will take place at the park which is on the corner, of the roundabout which joins the Shurdington Road and Upper Hatherley Way.
A map showing the location is below.

Training will probably take the form of a game of either football or touch rugby with some specific fitness work thrown in as well. Each session will start at 6.30pm and will run until 8.00pm ish.

There is currently mixed hockey taking place on Tuesday and Thursday nights being organised by Jon Thompson. If you are interested in playing and are not yet doing so please email lansdownhockey@gmail.com.

Hockey training will start on the Tuesday the 11th of August and will take place at Pates between 7pm and 8pm. This will run for four weeks after this training will start at Bournside.

Dear all,
We will be entering at least 1 team into the Gloucester Summer League again this year. I believe that it will follow the same format as last year, where it will start with mixed teams for the first part of the summer and then move into ladies and mens teams. I am assuming that the matches will be on Tues and Weds evenings but we will not be sure of this until we receive further information.
If you are interested in taking part please could you contact Jon Thompson on jt243 at fsmail.net or 07793 681046.

Mens 1st XI 0 Cardiff University A 1 Sunday, March 15, 2009

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown Men’s first team managed to lose a vital away game against fellow relegation strugglers Cardiff University A. The first half saw Cardiff play some nice hockey but they never really threatened the Lansdown goal. It was Lansdown who played the majority of the quality hockey creating a number of clear opportunities.

Unfortunately for Lansdown they were unable to convert any of the chances that came their way. Much to the frustration of Lansdown it was Cardiff who scored the opening goal when a player received the ball on the edge of the D and hit a good reverse stick shot which beat the Lansdown keeper. Half time came and Lansdown were frustrated at the score line but were optimistic of coming back into the game as they had been the better side.

The second half saw Lansdown have slightly less of the game as Cardiff retained possession well in their half, but Lansdown were still the better side and created the better chances. Incredibly the goal Lansdown deserved still did not come and with every opportunity spurned the pressure built on Lansdown as time was running out.

This pressure led to Lansdown losing their way slightly in the last ten minutes and indeed it was Cardiff who won a game that Lansdown should have had won comfortably by half time if their finishing had been better. Lansdown were dejected after the game but should take consolation in the fact that they played some fantastic hockey.

Mens 1st XI 3 Penarth 0 Sunday, March 8, 2009

The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown men’s first team recorded their second home victory in as many days when they beat Penarth 3-0. The game started well for Lansdown who immediately looked the more threatening. At times the hockey played by Lansdown was of a very high standard with Penarth struggling to gain any possession. This resulted in Lansdown opening the scoring when Steve Vickery scored his second in as many days when he slotted away the rebound from a saved short corner.

Lansdown continued to press Penarth and eventually they extended their lead when Ben Nicholls was in the right place to score from a pin point cross. In the closing moments of the first half Penarth came back into the game, however they never really looked like scoring and half time came with Lansdown holding a deserved two goal lead.

The second half started with Lansdown struggling to retain possession, this led to Penarth coming right back into the game. Unfortunately for Penarth they were still lacking any real threat in the final quarter of the pitch and were unable to trouble the impressive Andy Hockley, who had little to do but when called upon excelled.

With a quarter of the game remaining Lansdown found their rhythm and started to control the game creating a number of chances. Indeed it was Lansdown who scored next when captain Paul Vickers scored the third Lansdown goal with a quality drag flick finish which effectively finished the game as a contest. This proved to be the last action of the game and Lansdown were value for their win.
