This year we will be running two events, to celebrate our season, as numbers are too many to cater for everyone on one night. The Under 11’s and Under 9’s evening is on Friday 27th March 6 to 8 pm and the Under 13’s on Friday 3rd April 6 to 8 pm, both at Bentham Sports Club. The evening will take the format of previous years, an hour’s play in the sports hall (probably football & cricket) – no need to bring sticks – followed by food and awards. There will be the Stick Skill Award Certificates and lots of trophies as well as a children’s raffle.

The food will be ordered upon arrival and should be a choice of Sausages, Chicken Nuggets or Fish Fingers and Chips followed by Jelly and Ice Cream. There is a vegetarian option but we need to know this before the day. As we have had a couple of training sessions cancelled, these events are being subsidised by the club but we will be asking for £ 3.50 per head, which just covers the cost of the food. If any adults want the same food then they can also order this upon arrival.

We need to know numbers beforehand, in order to BOOK YOUR PLACE please contact Dave or Karen on 01242 233429 or 07958744180 before the 20th March.STICK SKILL AWARDS

Between now and the end of the season the U11 & U9’s will be concentrating on the Stick Skill Awards at training. These awards are based on a series of tests, designed by England Hockey, to reward improvement or skill acquisition and also encourage ongoing development as kids work towards higher stick skill standards. There are points awarded to achieve Gold, Silver, Bronze or Cub Standard. Everyone who takes part will get a certificate. There will also be prizes for the top achievers.

The monthly tournaments have been a great success, with a large number of children being given the opportunity to play. Our policy has been to give all players a chance to play rather than playing the strongest team available. Reports on these can be found on our website, under the Junior Section, at http://www.lansdownhockeyclub.co.uk please pay us a visit. Next Sunday 8th March does however see the more competitive Boys County Championships for U13’s & U11’s , where we will be playing our strongest sides available. The tournament runs from 10 to 4 pm at Dean Close School.

will run up to the 31st March, we will then be running sessions once a month over the summer, dates time & venue TBA.

Lansdown were well represented by the boys at both levels of the County Championships held at Dean Close. Their was determined play & tremendous effort against some very strong school sides, who are playing together far more regularly than ourselves. The u13’s were the only side to score against winners Dean Close! All the matches apart from Dean Close were very tight and we were a little unfortunate to lose some of them. They also missed out on fourth place and a medal by one goal, coming fifth. Their results were;
v Cheltenham College Lost 2-0
v Cirencester Won 1-0 (Josh Bradshaw-Howe)
v Cheltenham JHA Lost 1-0
v Yate Lost 1-0
v Gloucester Won 1-0 (Jamie Harper)
v Dean Close Lost 7-1 (Jamie Harper)
well done to;
Ben Holdaway GK, James Farquhar, Oli Ganniclifft, Jamie Harper, Chris Tarling, Josh Bradshaw-Howe, Tristan Murfitt, Charlie Howes, Harry Godwin, Max Ellis.

The U11’s saved their best till last beating Yate 2-0 with goals from Rory Murfitt & Sam Privett to finish 6th out of 7. We fielded a young and inexperienced side who put up a great effort against some older stronger teams. The School teams had the advantage of playing together regularly and having far more match preparation. It was great credit to the boys to win the last match following defeats to Dean Close, Cheltenham College, Pates, Lydney & Cirencester and playing in some horrible cold wet weather. The sun also came out for the final match to make it a happy ending.
Well done to Matthew Holdaway GK, Rory Murfitt, Ollie Palmer, Revie Wood, Ben Jenkins, Sam Privett, Jeremy Fox, Jack Williams, Dexter Lee.

Many thanks to Sid Ellis for managing the U13’s and to Simon Ganniclifft and Karen for umpiring.

We fielded two teams, as usual, despite being half term. In preparation for the County Champs we played our strongest side with very pleasing results. Unfortunately this meant the B team did not win a match but we fielded a lot of younger players and their effort was fantastic, hopefully they gained some valuable experience. The results for the A team were;
v Yate Won 2-1 (Charlie Howes 2 )
v Worcester Won 2-1 (Max Ellis, Tristan Murfitt)
v Cheltenham Won 1-0 (James Farquhar)
v Marlborough Won 2-1 (Charlie Howes,James Farquhar)
v Cirencester Won 1-0 (Charlie Howes)

Team Ben Holdaway GK, Max Ellis, Oli Ganniclifft,James Farquhar,Tristan Murfitt,Charlie Howes, Chris Tarling,Josh Bradshaw-Howe
 Well done their was some great team play and several excellent goals.

B Team Matthew Holdaway GK, Cameron Paton, Tom Butt, Matthew Collyer, Sam Godwin, Harry Godwin, Rory Murfitt, Dan Letherbarrow, Ollie Mosley.
The boys put in a lot of effort, particularly Cameron who held the team together and Dan who ran his socks off. We were also hampered by an injury to the exprienced Sam . Well done to underage Matt in goal , making some great saves and bravely playing on following a nasty blow to his helmet and to Rory getting well stuck in against older opponents.

The Boys & Girls both took part in the monthly tournament at the Ladies College. Whilst results for both teams were disappointing, bitterly cold conditions made it very hard to play, so it was great credit to all the children for competing so hard. The boys scored two cracking goals both powerful strikes from Sam Privett and Rory Murfitt, following good passing moves down the pitch. Special mention for Joe Hughes, on his debut, put in some great tackles and worked hard marking his player. The reults were;
v Yate Drew 0-0
v Cheltenham Lost 3-0
v Cheltenham Girls Drew 0-0
v Cheltenham Girls 3s Won 1-0 (Sam Privett)
v Yate Drew 1-1 ( Rory Murfitt)
Team Matt Holdaway, Rory Murfitt, Revie Wood, Will Warley, Jeremy Fox, Ben Jenkins,Joe Hughes, Sam Privett

The Girls results were;
v Yate Lost 1-0
v East Glos Lost 1-0
v Cheltenham 2’s Lost 1-0
v Cheltenham Lost 1-0
v Cheltenham 3’s Drew 1-1 ( Madeleine Jenkins a great solo run and strike)
Team Ellen Symington, Kiana McDonald, Emma Winder, Ellie Pearson, Georgina Paton, Madeleine Jenkins, Ellie Lyburn, Izzy & Liddy McGregor

Well done to everyone who played

Whilst the results were a little disappointing both teams played some excellent hockey at times , showing we have some great prospects for the future. The match between the two sides, unsuprislingly saw the best hockey of the day with end to end play, fine passing moves, brilliant goalkeeping and some great strikes. We just need to produce this play against the other clubs.  A special mention for Max Ellis & Ollie Mosley for some cracking goals, Matthew Holdaway for some outstanding saves against much older opponents , Will Warley, on his debut, for strong tackling & marking again against older opponents and Billy Claridge playing well on debut. The results were;
Lansdown 1
v Cheltenham 1 Lost1-0
v Cheltenham 2 Lost 1-0
v Marlborough Lost 2-0
v Cirencester Won 2-1 ( Tristan, James F )
v Lansdown 2 Lost 4-2 ( Sam, Harry)
Team Matt Holdaway, James Farquhar, Tristan Murfitt, Sam Godwin, Harry Godwin, James Lisk, Charlie Howes, Will Warley, Jack Green.

Lansdown 2’s
v Cirencester Won 3-0 (Ollie, Dan,Josh)
v Cheltenham 1 Lost 3-0

v Lansdown 1’s Won 4-2 (Max3, Ollie)

The boys put up a great effort at the monthly tournament, a much improved performance from the previous month. On the whole the teams we played were stronger than previously and this is reflected in the results. There was much more committment on the pitch and better team play. We only lacked a bit of fitness after the long Christmas break. Rory Murfitt ran his socks off with some great marking and tackling, as well as some hard hitting to clear the ball out of defence. Matthew Holdaway made numerous outstanding saves giving a fine display in goal. Ollie Palmer, Revie Wood & Harry Godwin worked really hard in midfield, linking well and creating many good attacking moves.  In defence  Ben Davis made important goal line clearances with his positional play being spot on. Jeremy Fox was everywhere, as usual putting many very strong tackles. Will Tucker again showed lots of energy working hard in midfield and defence with some great tackling. Finally up front Sam Privett capped a good display with two well taken goals. The results were;
v Lydney Won 1 -0 (Harry Godwin)
v Marlborough Drew 0-0
v Cirencester Lost 2-1 (Sam Privett)
v Cheltenham Lost 1-0
v Yate Lost 2-1 (Sam Privett)

The boys battled hard without much success but with a less experienced side vaulable match practice was gained.  We gave both Cheltenham & Marlborough tough games but a lapse in concentration with our marking cost us goals in both games.  The other games were all drawn 0 – 0 largely down to some excellent goalkeeping by Matthew Holdaway and good defending and clearing of the ball by Rory Murfitt.  Sam Tilley, Jack Williams and Dexter Lee linked well together and got in some good goal scoring positions but could not find the elusive finish.  Ollie Palmer and Revie Wood ran their socks off  in midfield putting in some good tackles.  Will Tucker and Ben Jenkins played in defence and midfield with a lot of energy and enthusiasm showing great potential for the future. Results were
v  Cheltenham Lost 1-0
v Marlborough Lost 1-0
v Gloucester Drew 0-0
v Lansdown Girls Drew 0-0
v Cheltenham Girls Drew 0-0

In bitterly cold conditions the boys played Cirencester & Chippenham twice, at Deer Park School. Cirencester had greater experience and played good team hockey. We battled hard and had some good attacking play but could not find a goal. Despite Matthew Holdaway making some excellent saves we were defeated 1 -0 & 3 – 0.  Against Chippenham we faired much better with two cracking games which saw good team play from both sides. The first game ended 0 – 0  and the second 2 -2, with two excellent moves being well finished by Sam Tilley & Sam Privett.  Ollie Palmer, Harry Godwin & Revie Wood all battled hard in midfield and created some good openings for the two Sam’s who linked well up front and looked to have an eye for goal. Cameron Cox showed great work rate through out the pitch and Oscar Horner and Jeremy Fox put in some great tackles in defence. Well done to all the team in really difficult conditions.
