Mens 1st XI 1 Stroud 2 Sunday, February 22, 2009Posted by Steve Vickery in Cheltenham Hockey, Match Report, Mens 1st XI.
The Snape Construction sponsored Lansdown men’s first team slipped to a disappointing defeat at home against table toppers Stroud. The game started with both sides playing some good hockey with neither side taking control of the game. After twenty minutes it was Stroud who took the lead, their goal was scored when a forward broke through the Lansdown defence and then sprinted clear before finishing well in the bottom corner. The game remained fairly even for the remainder of the first half. Lansdown may well regret there inability to convert any of the numerous short corners that they were awarded.
Stroud began to take control of the game in the opening moments of the second half; this was largely due to the Lansdown players beginning to wilt in the heat. This control eventually resulted in Stroud extending their lead when one of their forwards scored a fine deflected goal. Ben Snape ensured a tense finish to the game when he pulled one back for Lansdown with ten minutes to go. He hit a shot on the half volley which left the Stroud keeper with no chance.
Lansdown threw everything at Stroud in the closing moments of the game and Stroud also threatened on the break but neither side were able to score. The game finished and it was Stroud who took all three points and in all fairness were good value for their three points.
