The second league match of the weekend saw us put out a much stronger side and a much improved performance. We played our best hockey for many weeks and were unlucky not to take all the points. Dave Holdaway and James Mears linked well in midfield and kept strong running forwards Andy Allen and John Thompson well supplied. Our defence was very disciplined with tight marking from Tim Postlethwaite, Mark Evetts and Paul Williams unfortunately all three Cheltenham goals came from a slick short corner routine, with them converting three out of three. Lansdown took the lead three times with two goals from Andy Allen and one from John Thompson. Ian Matthews was denied a goal ( and a penalty ) when his powerful goal bound shot hit a defender’s foot, following a great run and pass from James Mears. However we did score from the resultant short corner, when Andy Allen swept in the pass back to the pusher out. Lansdown failed to convert their superior short corner count and Cheltenham’s well drilled routine was the difference on the day.
