Tuesday 3rd April
Ladies 3rd X1 3 v East Glos 2nd X1 0
This rearranged match with EG was to be our last match of the season, safe in the knowledge that we were to be promoted but needed to win this match to ensure that we held the league trophy aloft. EG started well taking all given opportunities from us, making us work hard to regain control of the match. A succession of penalty corners boosted our chances and towards the end of the first half Sara Thompson had a shot saved but allowed Jane Tilley to pick up the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net. The beginning of the second half was more upbeat for us playing some good hockey and keeping more possession. EG were only able to break on a couple of occassions, on one they gained a penalty corner which lead to a penalty flick from a clearance off of the line. With the odds against her, Karen Holdaway stood ready for the flick. She read the ball well and made an amazing save, we were still in the lead. This gave us the boost that we needed and the adrenalin kicked in. More pressure on EG started to see them suffer and our second goal came from great work between Hannah Milsom, Tash Box with Amy Ewing finishing from a great angle. We were holding EG in their half for the closing minutes of the match. Another penalty corner saw a stike from Sara Thompson hit the bottom left hand corner bringing the scoreline to 3-0. Jane Tilley then nearly slotted another one in from the right wing but was denied by the post. There was relief when the final whistle went but the celebrations were plenty. We had done it!!!
I would like to thank the club for all of the support that they have given. Individual thanks go to Phil Sidey, Liz Poole, Stu Skinner and Lance Worth for all of their help. I would also like to make a special thanks to my Vice – Elaine Higgins – for all of her help and support. Next season will mean stepping up a gear but I feel that we are ready for the challenge! We will be losing a few of our players due to university or work commitments so a special mention for them – Liz Poole, S. Angelo-Sparling, Hannah Milsom and Maxine Reeves. I wish them all the luck for the future.
