Ladies indoor squad consolidate position in National League Division One Monday, January 15, 2007Posted by becky in Cheltenham Hockey, Club News, Indoor Hockey, Ladies 1st XI, Match Report.
It has been a tough but extremely enjoyable two weekends in this years National League Indoor Division One competition. We were playing against National League North, South and Division One opposition and we were even mentioned on the England Hockey website as being the only non national league side in the competition. The first weekend in Hull was extremely tough with games against Bradford, Aldridge, Liverpool Sefton and Harleston Magpies but we managed to beat Harleston Magpies on Sunday morning 5-3. The games against Bradford and Aldridge on the Saturday were close with us losing 4-6 on both occasions but our last game on the Sunday wasn’t as good with the final score 5-1 to Liverpool Sefton.
A week later we were in Bath at the University and we knew we needed to win at least two games to give ourselves any chance of staying in Division One. First game was against Barnes Hounslow & Ealing and we won this 6-5 but our second game against Sevenoaks didn’t go our way and we lost 5-2. On the final day of the competition we had bottom place Wimbledon and favourites Clifton to play. The first game against Wimbledon was a must win game and thats exactly what we did winning 8-6. This result ensured our position in the league and meant we were playing National League Indoor Division One hockey again next season. With the pressure off, our final game against Clifton was probably the best game we played all weekend. Clifton needed to win to ensure they won the league – but we didn’t make it easy for them. We opened the scoring after a minute from a short corner and remained in the lead until the 11th minute when Clifton equalised. The score line remained close to the very end with the lead changing between both sides but it was Clifton who scored the winning goal to take the three points with a 7-6 win.
Our squad of players were fantastic, everyone gave 100% and I think we were definitley the umpires favourite team. Well done girls, you did yourselves and Lansdown proud. Thank you to all our supporters who came to Bath to watch us play – you certainly helped and thank you to Bob and Chris for our warm up jackets – we looked great in them.
