2nd XI 4 Whitchurch B 2 Monday, December 11, 2006

The seconds ended the year with an emphatic victory that should have been by a greater scoreline. We started strongly with Dave Holdaway, Ian Matthews & Mark Williams dominating the midfield. Captain Andy Allen led the way sweeping in the first goal from a short corner, slipped back to the injector. The second came from a powerful Ian Matthews strike and the third from Jon Thompson flicking in from close range. We thought we had added a fourth but the goal was disallowed and Whitchurch went up the other end and scored from a short corner to make the half time score 3-1.

We started the second half slowly with Whitchurch putting pressure on our defence, but strong tackling from Mark Evetts, TP, Rich Fear and Sid kept them out. Ace Cupper made some fine saves in goal and brother Mike added young legs in midfield to help out defensively. We had the better of the scoring opportunities, but their keeper was in inspired form. One save from Jon at close range being top drawer. Ian hit a post and had a short corner strike disallowed for being too high, when he was back on the half way line celebrating! They scored a second with a superb strike from a narrow angle at the edge of the circle, giving Ace no chance. We responded well and were rewarded with a deserved fourth when Andy finished off a great counter attack led by Mark Williams.

The victory moves us back up to third and we celebrated with our xmas night out, thanks to Andy for organising. Thanks to Steve Plant (great advantage for Ian’s goal) and especially Karen Holdaway, at short notice, for umpiring so well.
