Mens Veterans - End of season Report Wednesday, April 30, 2008

We had a very successful Mens Vets season,
we played a total of 26 games, won 20 , lost 3 and drew 3 - scored 116 and let in 61. Perhaps next season we’ll have to work on the defence, but it’s actually no worse than the previous season!

DP was top goalscorer with 30, followed by Andy Allen with 21, Matts 13, Rupert 11 and Dave Holdaway and Rob Hall on 10.

My thanks to all who have played and supported the team throughout the
season, especially Mark Williams for covering for me on and off the pitch as well as
umpiring. Not forgetting thanks to JP without whom we’d have no fixtures and
congratulations to -
Player of the season - Andy Allen.

Paul Bickell.

Ladies 1st XI Win West Premier One League Sunday, April 6, 2008

A 0-0 draw against second place Team Bath confirmed the ladies 1’s as Champions of West Premier One. Lansdown were expecting Bath to come out all guns blazing as they needed to win by 4 clear goals to take the title but a determined performance by every player in the squad kept Bath hoping for goals rather than creating clear cut chances. A very proud day for the ladies 1’s and for Lansdown Hockey Club. Thank you to everyone who came to cheer us on - the atmosphere was excellent and it was great to share our league win with you all.
Next stop is the playoffs to try and gain National League status. We have a home fixture on Sunday 20 April against Springfield UCLAN, an away fixture against Southgate on Sunday 27 April and then 3 games over the Bank Holiday weekend at the University of West England, Bristol. Full details of times etc will follow.

Ladies 1’s 8 - Clifton2’s 2 Sunday, March 16, 2008

The ladies 1st XI were back on song this week and racked up their 13th win of the season with an emphatic 8-2 goal fest against Clifton 2’s. Nina Emery opened the scoring after 4 minutes after some good play down the right by Hannah Lloyd and Becky Mawby. Clifton equalised 5 minutes later from open play but it was Lansdown who had the lead at half time with their second goal coming from Becky Mawby. The second half saw Clifton draw level soon after the break but the turning point for Lansdown came when keeper Kelz made an excellent save from a Clifton penalty corner and Julia Smith saving the rebound off the line. From then it was Lansdown’s game, the team stepped up the pace and were rewarded with six goals in the second half. Helen Wicks scored the 3rd, Becky scored her second to make it 4-2, Helen then scored her second to make it 5-2, Hannah Lloyd then made it 6-2 from a short corner, Gill Russ scored her first goal for the 1’s to make it 7-2 and finally Ann-Marie Randle completed the scoreline to make it 8-2. A fantastic team effort and a great way to bounce back from a disappointing result last week. Thank you to everyone who came to support us today, it is very much appreciated.

Our final game of the season is against 2nd place Team Bath on Saturday 5 April at Bournside School. Both teams have all to play for - the opportunity to go to the National League playoffs. So, if your free come and support us, it is a match not to be missed!

Ladies 1’s 0 - ISCA 1 Sunday, March 9, 2008

The ladies 1’s  suffered their first defeat of the season away to ISCA. Lansdown started brightly and created several chances with Nina Emery, Becky Mawby, Kim Pullon and Hannah Moon all testing the ISCA keeper. ISCA had chances of their own but some good defending by Karen Fynn, Julie Stowe and Keeper Kels kept the home side out and the scoreline all square at half time. ISCA scored the one and only goal of the game with a reverse stick strike midway through the second half. Lansdown rallied to find the equaliser and were awarded a short corner on full time but were unable to convert. Thanks must go to Kate and Lisa for stepping in. You certainly held your own in a game that could have gone either way. Next week we are home to Clifton, 2.00pm Bournside, so if you’re free come along and support us.

Mens 2nd XI 3 Cardiff & UWIC 2 Sunday, March 9, 2008

At last a thoroughly deserved win and what may prove a vital three points. Lansdown were well prepared and really up for the match, which has not always been the case this season. We started strongly and took the match to Cardiff with Dave Holdaway, Ian Matthews, James Mears & Andy Allen dominating the midfield. First half goals came through two flowing attacks from midfield with sharp finishes from John Thompson and Ian Matthews, both beating the advancing keeper from distance. The defence was also in much sharper mood than recently, with Sid Ellis marshalling confidently and clearing the ball well from 16’s. Mark Evetts and the ever reliable Dan Caudle marked tightly and tackled strongly. Pete Holdaway and Ace Cupper came on and also did a disciplined defensive job. When the opposition did create scoring opportunities Captain and MAN OF THE MATCH Niall Hyndman was in inspired form pulling off some great saves.
We added a third early in the second half when Dave Holdaway beat several players along the back line, from a long corner, to set up Dave Postlethwaite for a close range tap in. Unfortunately we failed to add a fourth from several goal mouth scrambles and then allowed the opposition back into the match, when poor tackling gave them the scoring chance. Fortunately they failed to convert a Penalty stroke, hitting the bar and scored their second three minutes from time. The previous match against them we conceded with the last hit to draw but this time we held our nerve and did not allow another opportunity.
